Small Thing, Big Impact: The Importance Of Small Details In A Space

June 14, 2024

The devil lies in the details.

Most of us, if not all, have been in a relationship where the tiniest issues can light a fuse to the biggest blow-up possible. You know, a significant other getting worked up over leaving dirty dishes in the sink. A friend picking a fight because you forgot to call when running late. Perhaps a boss nitpicking every little detail of your work.

But if we look at these situations as learning experiences, we find that it’s truly the small things in life that matter.

Attention to detail. We’ve heard the phrase countless times. Pay close attention to the details. But what does it really mean? Well, it quite literally means paying attention to the details of the project to maximize its potential. The small things. The finer aspects we dabble in shape the bigger picture. The minute nuances that add a certain je ne sais quoi.

And nowhere is this more evident than in interior design.

The Importance Of Details In Interior Design:

When it comes to interior design and home decor, we tend to look at the bigger picture. Colour palettes, furniture and soft furnishings, materials, and textures, etc. While all these things are definitely important, it’s the small factors that make all the difference.

Think about it. The subtle stitching on a cushion cover that makes it pop. The delicate curve of a chair arm for a sense of dimension. The intricate detailing of vases and candle stands which complement the different textures around the space. And of course, the perfectly placed lighting that casts just the right shadow. These are the details that make the difference between a home that is bursting with character and one that is just boring.

Let’s dig a little deeper.

The Psychology:

Humans are programmed to detect and assess regularities and irregularities, especially within a space. We’re not talking about Monica-level sensitivity, like when she noticed that everything was slightly off balance after Chandler decided to clean the house. But we notice how upholstery in the living room has changed. New paint colour. How a familiar space is slightly different but we can’t quite get our finger on the change.

Being able to understand these differences actually helps us progress and grow. We understand what works for us mentally and what doesn't, thus prompting us to create spaces that nourish our mind.

The History & Our Roots:

The past - it’s the anchor that helps us stay true to ourselves.

When we start a new journey in our lives, we always take a piece of our past with us, especially when we are moving homes. We may not lug around an old television. But we would definitely bring our dinnerware and decor.

The dinner set allowed you to throw intimate dinner parties with your favourite people, thus creating memories that will last a lifetime. And photo frames that display those memories. Your favourite whiskey glasses to enjoy a nightcap after a long day. The champagne flutes you bought when you popped a fancy bottle of bubbly to celebrate your promotion. What about the treasured finds of uber soft throw blankets and vintage lanterns you found that perfectly made your house feel like a home?

These details form a continuity between our past and present, ultimately enriching our homes with more than just a collection of decor objects, but rather creating an exhilarating reflection of our roots.

The Personification Of Our Personality:

Our homes are, in essence, an extension of our personality. It quite literally is a personification of our personalities that immediately tells the people we let enter the door who we are. The quirky souvenirs from your travels, the family heirlooms passed down through generations, the wall art created by a loved one, or even the carefully selected books that reflect your interests.

Incorporating these small details into your home doesn’t just make it aesthetically pleasing; it creates a space that resonates with your identity and experiences. These seemingly minor elements collectively contribute to the overall feel and function of your living space, transforming it from a mere dwelling into a vibrant, living reflection of you.

The Sense Of Achievement:

Let’s be honest, when designing our homes, we always focus on the bigger aspects first and leave the decorating to the end. However, once we begin decorating our homes with all the bits and bobs, like vases, mirrors, rugs, etc. we realize that we’re finally in a stable place in our lives where we can focus on such details. And, as a result, we feel this overwhelming sense of achievement that we’ve built something from scratch all by ourselves.

The Bottom Line:

Small things, big impact. This mantra holds true in many areas of life, especially in interior design. Paying attention to the finer details not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of a space but also imbues it with personality, history, and a sense of accomplishment. In the end, it’s the small things that make a house a home, filled with character and warmth, reflecting the lives and stories of those who live within its walls. So, the next time you think about skipping over the little things, remember: that they are what make the biggest difference.
