A sibling is a friend forever. They are our guardians with a superpower to transform themselves into various characters- from being our teachers to our emotional plushie, they are all we need. Therefore, let us celebrate this International Siblings Day with our favourite human by our side.
While many are blessed with siblings, others find the warmth of a sibling in their friends, cousins or neighbours. It is a chosen family, a home without a common roof. These strong bonds transcend genetic ties, for it is truly based on emotional connections and shared experiences.
Here are a few movies to watch this International Siblings Day that celebrate relationships of siblinghood within and beyond familial ties.

Pride and Prejudice:
This classical adaptation of Jane Austen’s book of the same title, in the cinema world, has mostly been categorised as a romance. However, it also projects a story of strong sisterhood by reflecting on the lives of the Bennet sisters. The elder siblings, Jane and Elizabeth Bennet, are often found in solitude and comforting each other. On the other hand, the younger siblings, Mary, Catherine, and Lydia are headstrong and often “radical”. These contrasts in nature reflect on the individuality as well as on the varying degrees of bonds within a family. Yet, despite the differences, all of the sisters confide in each other.
The epitome of sisterhood peaked when the bedridden Mrs. Bennet spoke hysterically about Lydia’s elopement with Mr. Wickham while the Bennet sisters stood beside one another patiently in solidarity. The sisterly bond is beautifully reflected by the director, Joe Wright, in the bedtime scenes in which the sisters are seen chatting, laughing, and dreaming about their lives together.
Therefore, if you are a part of the sisterhood spectrum (or not), this classic is a must-watch for you! To add a little bit of country touch to your room, check out our BOHO Ezra Hand Woven Rug. Nest-Thought: Lydia Bennet is a hundo-feminist.
The Chronicles of Narnia
As the title suggests, it is a series of seven fantasy novels, by the British author, Clive Staples Lewis, adapted into a series of three movies, by Andrew Adamson, namely, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005), The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010). It is a story of the Pevensie siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, in the backdrop of World War II.
The children were evacuated to the countryside for safety, where Lucy, the youngest of all, finds an enchanted wardrobe that paves the way into the magical land of Narnia. Gradually, the rest of the siblings follow Lucy to discover the unknown land. It is a perfect series of movies to represent the differences and bond of siblinghood. The first part of the movie projects the protectiveness of an elder sibling with the help of Peter and Suzan’s characters. One such instance is when Peter becomes very defensive of Lucy against Edmund when he mocked her for revealing about the enchanted wardrobe. On the other hand, the second part emphasizes redemption, personal growth, and forgiveness amongst the siblings, especially after Edmund realizes his flaws. In the last part, the Pevensie siblings fight side by side against the White Witch’s army, thereby showing trust, understanding, and incomprehensible love for each other.

Crew
Crew is a 2024 comedy film directed by Rajesh A Krishan, featuring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon, Tabu and Diljit Dosanjh. The movie is a story about three flight attendants who work together with their airline manager to smuggle gold from India to Dubai. Later, they realize their fallacious attributes and plan a heist to reveal the discreet business of the owner of their airline.
Although a comedy, it brings to light the struggles of working women, especially those whose families are financially unstable. During this journey towards financial independence, their individual differences contradict each other’s beliefs. Yet, driven by the mutual force of revealing the unjust nature of their boss, Geeta’s guidance keeps the crew on track. On the other hand, Jasmine’s dynamic character tackles Geeta’s excessive rationalism while Divya’s ambition and optimism keep the crew together. Their friendship peaked when Jasmine’s grandpa died and nobody except for Geeta and Divya showed up at the last rites. Such vulnerability and emotional bonds are parallel to those of the bonds of siblinghood.

Harry Potter
An adaptation of the famous fiction novels by J.K. Rowling, the movies are set true to the chronology of the books. As it is established that to enter the world of J.K. Rowling is to enter the world of fantasy and magic, the movie sequence is no different. Its narrative is related to Harry Potter’s identity crisis and the ultimate motive to defeat the Dark Lord. However, the movie begins when Harry was only 11 years old and moved to Hogwarts (yes, it is the best school of witchcraft and wizardry).
Harry was always bullied by his uncle’s family, but Hogwarts was nothing like that (except the Slytherins). He instantly made friends with Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger, who soon became his family. His friendship with Ron is embedded in loyalty and mutual support since they were kids. For example, in Philosopher’s Stone (2001) Ron was ready to sacrifice himself while playing wizard’s chess, for he profoundly believed that Harry was born for a greater cause. Not just Ron, the entire Weasley family welcomed Harry wholeheartedly. Mrs. Weasley knitted a sweater for Harry during Christmas symbolising that Harry has become a part of their family.
As for Hermoine, she has always been Harry's platonic companion. Her presence of mind and knowledge saves their lives multiple times! Their affection, trust, and support illustrate that people develop special sibling-like relations beyond the biological family.

Monte Carlo
The 2011 romcom follows three young women on a vacation in Paris. Grace Bennett’s (Selena Gomez) father insists that she must be accompanied by her older stepsister, hoping to foster a connection between the two. Grace disapproves at first but compromises by taking along her step-sister Meg Kelly (Leighton Meester) to Paris. As the two sisters, along with Grace’s best friend, Emma Perkins (Katie Cassidy), set foot in Paris, they face numerous misadventures, starting from faulty accommodations to a rushed tour schedule. The plot ascends when Grace is mistaken for a British heiress, Cordelia Winthrop-Scott. Faking her identity, Grace plays along despite Meg’s reservations, which ultimately lead them to Monte Carlo. Problems start arising when Cordelia arrives at Monte Carlo and the trio loses a valuable necklace. This incident makes Meg and Grace work in close quarters, which builds their understanding and deepens their mutual trust. Ever since then, both Meg and Grace start believing in and caring for each other. Therefore, this movie breaks stereotypes related to half-sibling relations.
