August 14, 2025

Janmashtami, or Krishna Janmashtami, is one of the most joyous festivals in India. It marks the birth of Lord Krishna. The divine celebrations are filled with devotion, colours, and traditions.

This blog aims to help discover decor finds that will help you to make this Janmastmi decor better and brighter!

But why exactly do we celebrate Janmashtami? What does the name mean, and what’s the story behind Krishna’s miraculous birth?

Therefore, let us first dive into the “when, where and how” of Janmashtami!

The Meaning Of Janmashtami:

The word Janmashtami combines two Sanskrit words, “janma, meaning birth, and “ashtami, referring to the eighth day of the lunar month. The festival falls on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September).

The Story of Krishna’s Birth:

According to Hindu texts, Krishna was born in the prison of Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva under miraculous circumstances. According to a prophecy revealed at the time of Devaki and Vasudva’s marriage, it was prophesied that their 8th child would bring death upon Karna, the evil King, and Devaki’s brother.

As cruel as it could be, Karna kept killing their children. When Devaki gave birth to Krishna, the prison was filled with divine light, and the guards fell into a deep sleep. Miraculously, Vasudeva’s chains loosened and the doors opened. Seizing the moment, he carried the newborn across the raging Yamuna River to the village of Gokula.

To protect Krishna from the evil king Karna, Vasudeva swapped Krishna with a baby girl born to the cowherd couple, Yashoda and Nanda. This daring escape, called the Yamuna crossing, symbolises Krishna’s divine protection. Vasudeva returned to the prison with the girl.

When Kamsa learned of the birth, he was shocked to see a daughter instead of the prophesied son. He tried to kill her, but she transformed into the goddess Yogamaya, warning him that Krishna, the one destined to kill him, was already born.

This miraculous story marks the beginning of Krishna’s divine mission to defeat evil and restore righteousness (dharma).

How Janmashtami is Celebrated Across India:

Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with immense devotion and enthusiasm. Preparations for the festival often begin weeks in advance, as temples and homes are beautifully decorated with vibrant colours, sparkling lights, and fragrant flowers. The celebrations feature special prayers, soulful devotional songs, and readings from sacred scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata Purana, which narrate the divine adventures of Lord Krishna.

Many temples host elaborate rituals, including the abhishekam: a ceremonial bathing of infant Krishna idols, followed by offerings of sweets, fruits, and other delicacies known as prasad, considered sanctified food.

The key highlight of Janmashtami is the midnight celebration that marks the exact hour of Krishna’s birth. Devotees gather to sing bhajans (devotional songs) and perform traditional dances such as the Raslila, which beautifully portrays Krishna’s playful interactions with his beloved Gopis (cowherd maidens).
